NATIVITY PTO HISTORY

Prepared by Cindy Hutchins, Nativity Elementary Principal

Nativity School was established in September of 1960. This momentous event was made possible through the involvement, dedication and hard work of the families of Nativity School. This strong tradition has remained to this day. Prior to the forming of the Fargo Catholic Schools Network in 1981, Nativity School had two active parent boards. The Nativity School Board and the Parent Teacher Organization had distinctive roles. The School Board was the visioning group who focused on administrative support, curriculum enhancement and enrichment activities for the school. The PTO was responsible for relationship “community” building and fund raising. In 1984, the groups decided to combine due to the establishment of the FCSN school board. At that time much care was given to write the bylaws to represent the needs of the total school community.

The early days of fund raising included the annual carnival/ raffle which have always been held on the Friday of Catholic Schools Week. The fall fundraiser, for many years, was the making (from scratch) pizzas in the school gym. This three day process went late into the nights and involved assembly lines, truck crews, delivery folks and perhaps the most important…the sauce makers! Overtime “pizza peelers” became the hot item and this new modern approach to selling pizzas took over. Pizza sales were finally ended when the idea for Kids Cards came forward. This was a welcome change for many of us!

Nativity School has been blessed with countless gifts from the PTO’s efforts. Most important has been the great parent involvement! The support given as a resource/ sounding board for the school administration has been a valuable treasure which continues to benefit the students. Other benefits include:

• The establishment of a foreign language program
• A new playground (new at the time!)
• New student desks
• Outreach Activities
• Technology
• Growth in enrollment
• Teacher support
• Whiteboards
• Enrichment materials
• Owl garden
• Liturgy enhancement
• Expansion of Volunteer opportunities
• Positive public relations
• Teamwork with the FCSN and the parishes
The list goes on…

The Nativity School Parent Teacher Organization continues to be a flagstaff example of positive energy for an effective school. Through the present PTO we can continue to evolve as we work together for our children. Welcome aboard!
