12.03.09 Committee and Nativity PTO Board Update - Phase Two

To provide background information and preparation for the January 2010 Nativity Playground Renovation Committee Meeting, Lee Hoedl held investigative meetings in November 2009 with:

(1) Scott Klemetson (Deckmasters/Sport Court), to further explore pricing specifics and overall timeline for the sport court

(2) Ken Follman (Dakota Fence), to further explore playground equipment options and be provided with "springboard suggestions" for remaining playground/fitness equipment.

Below is provided a bullet-point overview from these conversations. Following this overview is an initial pricing estimate for both the sport court and the additional playground equipment and a proposed tentative timeline for the installation of both playground items.

DECKMASTERS/SPORT COURT

In discussing the overall sport court development and installation process, Scott Klemetson of Deckmasters provided the following information:

  • TIMELINE FOR DECISIONS: In order to have the sport court prepped and installed by the end of July 2010, materials need to be decided upon and ordered by early June 2010 (seeTimeline below).
  • INSTALLATION PROCESS: Due to the nature of present playground layout, the play/fitness equipment and surfacing will need to be completed before beginning on the sport court preparation and installation (refer to Proposed Playground Site Model).
  • COURT MARKINGS: In order to lower overall expenses, it is suggested Nativity install the sport court tiles when ready. Deckmasters would be responsible for the permanent court markings once it is installed.
  • EXPENSE: A preliminary financial figure for the sport court items is presented below; an approximate total of $30,700.00.
  • EDGING: It is recommended that edging be installed on the sport court and that anchors be placed, at a minimum, in the corners of the court so as ensure permanency. As well, the edging will address ADA accessibilty ot the sport court. The cement foundation should also allow for ADA accessibility on the north side of the court.
  • TILING COLOR: Nativity School can choose any manner of tiling color for the sport court, as well as logo designs (part of the permanent court markings). To view court options and colors, click HERE.
  • DRAINAGE: The issue of drainage (rain and snow off of the sport court) will need to be addressed by the Playground Renovation Committee. Due to the unique nature of the location of the proposed sport court and the unknown development of the concrete walk/driveway to the north of the court, it is suggested that drainage occur toward the west (toward South University) of the court. There would be a 1/8-inch drop every two feet of the court; approximately 4 inches overall.

DAKOTA FENCE/PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT

In discussing the remaining playground/fitness equipment, Ken Follman of Dakota Fence provided the following suggestions (based on the remaining space available):

  • TIMELINE FOR DECISIONS: In order to In order to have the playground equipment prepped and installed by the end of June 2010, materials need to be decided upon and ordered by late April/early May 2010 (seeTimeline below).
  • EXPENSE: Given the parameters of an $7000 - $10,000 equipment budget, the play/fitness cluster below is suggested. The image on the left shows the location of the equipment within Area B of the proposed site (refer to Proposed Playground Site Model). The images on the right provide a sample view of the various equipment that would make up the "play/fitness cluster." Click on any of these images to gain a larger viewing. Discussion within the Nativity Playground Renovation Committee and input from the Nativity community will occur before final decisions are made on play/fitness equipment.

  • INSTALLATION PROCESS: Due to the nature of present playground layout, the play/fitness equipment and surfacing will need to be completed before beginning on the sport court preparation and installation (refer to Proposed Playground Site Model).
  • AREA B: The smaller remaining area signified as Area B (to the left of the sport court) could not be used for playground equipment. This area will be incorporated with the present playground space to the north and could become the "Gordy and Carol Johansen Memorial Park/Playground" space, complete with benches and shade trees.
