GAMES COMMITTEE

PURPOSE

It is the purpose of the Games Committee to provide the Carnival with a variety of game venues for the entire family, for prize-winning and entertainment.

Games during the annual Carnival are divided into two categories: Classroom Games and Gym Games. There is a coordinator for each of these general venues. Parent volunteers have historically been utilized during the night of the Carnival to staff both classroom and gym games.

Ideas for various themes, games and prizes for school carnivals can be found at http://www.schoolcarnivals.com

ONGOING DISCUSSION ITEMS/INFORMATION

  • There were a couple of new games added at the 2005 Carnival. The most popular was the ‘roving game’ in which a volunteer walked around the carnival and brought the game ‘to’ the player. It was a good fill in for kids waiting in line. Also the ‘horserace’ game was a popular new game. Those would be good keepers for next year.
  • All of the gym games were very busy. All of the classroom games were busy as well.
  • The beading booth should be replaced with something else next year. It was closed down an hour early because of no interest. The tattoo/hair color/face painting booth was popular, but an adult needs to oversee the entire operation to keep the lines moving. The hair especially should be one or two streaks of one color – it took way too long this year.
  • The cake walk should also be assessed before it begins. If there are a lot of cakes and bags of candy, there should be two items given out per round. As the supply changes throughout the evening, adjustments of upping to 3-4 prizes or reducing to one prize can take place after the first hour. There were actually prizes left this year and there should never be anything left from the cake walk.
  • The photo booth was absolutely gorgeous this year, but no one could find it. If kept, this booth should be moved into the gym where it would receive more traffic.
  • We also tried an Extreme Mini Raffle this year, and it would have been more successful with better placement. It was placed on the front counter and got too little traffic. If it is tried next year, it should be placed on one of the ticket tables, or on its own separate table in the gym.
  • Reducing ticket sales to a single table at the school entrance should be considered. The ticket tables take up valuable walking room in the hallways. If two ticket tables are still deemed necessary, one should be in the gym itself and one set back in the hallway leading to the library to allow optimum traffic flow.
  • Overhead signage should considered for the 2006 carnival. Hanging signs from the ceiling in front of each door indicating what activity is in each room will help carnival-goers find activities easier. A glance down each hallway will easily show what is in each classroom. There is also no hard and fast rule that the games need to go in the north hall classrooms. If the games are in the classrooms on one side of both hallways, traffic flow would be better.
  • The games coordinators need to make certain to patrol their areas for the entire evening. There were concerns with classroom games at several points throughout the evening, and no one was patrolling or trouble-shooting in those areas.
